A Concise Dictionary of English Slang Third edition
Slang is spicy, often humorous, sonnetimes vulgar, and occasionally novel and therefore obscure. It is one of the nnost volatile components of language, and is in a constant state of change. It is part of the tendency towards less formal English that has developed throughout the twentieth century. Both slang and colloquialisnn belong to this category of informal English, although differences between formal and informal English are not as distinct as they used to be.
In revising this dictionary, B.A. Phythian has emphasised slang at the expense of colloquialism, because the former is less frequently recorded in generally available form, and has confined himself largely to current usage. This third edition contains some 650 new entries; rather more entries than this number have been discarded as being dated or in infrequent use.
