A Design and Construction Handbook for Energy-Saving Houses is no ordinary housebuilding book that deals with general information about general houses. This is a book that gets down to specifics and those special techniques and ideas that have made Wade's houses so unique and less expensive than others of similar or less quality. With generous use of photographs and illustrations, he takes readers through preparation: site selection, materials, tools, financing, working with contractors, road building; and through all construction operations: utilities, layout and foundation, framing, roofing, wiring and plumbing, masonry, interior carpentry.
and finishes.
In addition. Wade also presents 11 custom-made houses, each with floor plans and elevations. They range widely in price, size, and design. One is designed as a retirement home, another a very low cost basic house. There is a solar shed, a pole house, and an octagon-shaped house, as well as several with attached solar greenhouses. They all make use of natural materials and low-cost building techniques that result in low maintenance, low utility bills, and handsome extras you never find in a ready-to-buy house.
There is a complete set of working drawings, with materials lists and specifications for three different versions of one of Wade's most popular houses. A detailed listing of recommended sources, tools, and materials, and of architects, contractors, and builder's schools gives the would-be builder plenty of sources of ideas, advice, and supplies.
Alex Wade, an architect for over 20 years, specializes in sensible, good-looking house designs. He was a major contributor to Low-Cost, Energy-Efficient Shelter and the author of the most popular 30 Energy-Efficient Houses . . . You Can Build. He lives in Mount Marion, New York.
