A Golden Age
The arts of late nineteenth-century Vienna are widely known, yet the art and architecture of Hungary, the smaller part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, are rarely considered. It was a time of economic growth and dynamic achievement in Hungary and this publication traces development from 1896 to the beginning of the First World War in 1914 revealing a remarkable flourishing of the fine and applied arts and architecture. A close involvement with contemporary European styles, especially Art Nouveau is clear; yet equally evident is the search for a national identity and a cultural heritage rooted in folk art and Eastern traditions which was to give Hungary's visual arts such
a distinctive character.

A GOLDEN AGE: ART AND SOCIETY IN HUNGARY 1896-1914 has been compiled by art historians Gyöngyi Éri and Zsuzsa Jobbágyi with essays by contributors Iván T. Berend, Lajos Németh and Ilona Sármány-Parsons.
