Both the author and the publisher of this guide have intended it for concert-going audiences, to serve as a primer for Bartok's orchestral, stage and chamber music compositions. The majority of these works have already become repertoire pieces in concert life. They are frequently heard on the radio, and some of their characteristic melodic phrases, tone colours and rhythms have consciously or unconsciously become part of the musical experience of unprejudiced music-lovers. Bartok's musical legacy, however, also includes a less familiar, less frequently performed and less easily approached territory. These works, like high mountain peaks, are only to be reached by a long and sometimes steep path.

A CONCISE HISTORY
OF HUNGARIAN MUSIC
Hungarian music has interested and appealed to European audiences for the past two hundred years. Such great composers as Haydn and Beethoven, among others, liked to use elements of Hungarian folk music in their works, and Franz Liszt also drew attention to composed Hungarian music. More recently, the two outstanding Hungarian composers of this century, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, placed before the world the genuine music of Hungary, allowing it to be rediscovered by means of compositions that reach back to the roots, the ancient folksong.
Still, however, few realize that the past two hundred years do not contain the whole story of Hungarian music. This survey by Bence Szabolcsi, the eminent musicologist, guides readers back to its sources tracing its development over a thousand years to the famous modern works.
This book is both a valuable compilation of information for musicians and for music-lovers an important aid to understanding the genius and art of contemporary music, particularly that of Bartók.
