A LEADER'S GUIDE TO
The Kids' Guide to Worl(inq Out Conflicts
Teaching the skills of conflict resolution and violence prevention can seem daunting. But it's the orJy way to make our homes, schools, and communities more peaceful. And students want to leam these skills. They're tired of feeling unsafe, threatened, and afraid. They're hungry for an end to the emotional and sometimes physical violence they see or experience every day. As one student said, "If we stopped fighting, our hves would be much better."
Used with the student book, The Kids' Guide to Working Out Conflicts, this leader's guide makes teaching these skills much less daunting and more doable. You'll find concrete, proven ways to:
• foster respect and positive communication
• reduce conflict and violence
• teach anger management skills
• build compassion for others
You'll leam specific techniques to help students:
• think instead of react
• cool down instead of act out
• listen instead of blame
• walk away from fights
• counter bullying
• fortify young people against the effects of teasing and other hurtful behaviors
i (f
• make school a more peaceful pl^ce
• stand up for themselves assertively, not aggressively
• empathize with others
• help kids who are picked on
This guide can be used in a wide variety of settings—in and out of school, with kids in a classroom, a small group, or a youth group setting. The student book teaches eight steps to becoming an effective conflict solver; the 25 sessions in this guide coordinate with those steps. You may choose to lead all 25 sessions or select those that best fit your setting and your students' needs. Each session is about 45 minutes in length. The materials required are minimal; handouts are provided as reproducible pages in this book. In sum, this guide includes everything you need to give students what they so desperately need: real skills for dealing with conflict, getting along better with almost anyone, and feeling a lot better about themselves.
