In /i Map of Modern English Verse John Press, himself a poet, explores a fascinating area of literary history, large tracts of which will be unknown to all but the most industrious readers of twentieth-century poetry. He has assembled what may be called a 'source book', consisting of a general introduction to the period, followed by fourteen sections each devoted to a poet or a group of poets, starting with 'The Later Poetry of W. B. Yeats' and ending with 'The Movement and the Poets of the 1950s'. The book deals in all with the work of nearly 60 poets. The long sections on the Imagists, on the early poetry of Ezra Pound, and on T. S. Eliot, stress the Anglo-American origins of modern English poetry, and the contributions to the art of poetry in England made by American expatriates. Of particular value will be the extracts from the many important prefaces, articles, reviews, letters, and other fugitive writings which were lying forgotten in books now out of print or in the pages of dead periodicals.
John Press is the author of The Chequer'd Shade: Reflections on Obscurity in Poetry, Rule and Energy: Trends in British Poetry since the Second World War, and The Lengthening Shadows: Observations on Poetry and its Enemies.
