There is now widespread interest in religious questions, and this interest tends to concentrate on the vital points in Christianity: the meaningfulness of religious language, the reality of God, etc. The debate crosses many old barriers. Yet precisely because the debate is vital and in some ways novel, readers may neglect to inform themselves about the intellectual background - to their own impoverishment.
It is hoped that this Reader, with its historical introduction and editorial comments, will be used in sixth forms, parishes, colleges and universities, and by private readers. Those using it will gain some first-hand knowledge of the work of the great Protestant thinkers Barth, Bultmann, Tillich, Bonhoeffer; the new mood in Roman Catholic theology (Rahner, Schillebeeckx, de Chardin); and the pioneering discussions of the significance for the Christian faith of science and analytical philosophy.
