This novel fills a long-wanted gap in the awful annals of Charlie Mortdecai - art-dealer, marksman, dirty-fighting hobbyist and now, to his dismay, married to a voluptuous millionairess whose bed-time exploits are equalled by her involvement in bizarre international crime.
Aided by his most trusty thug, the one-fanged, monocular, knuckle-dustered Jock, Charlie is coerced into a plot to assassinate a Very Important Person Indeed, undergoes an intensive course at a College whose syllabus is quite unlike that of Vassar, is tangled into a conspiracy which threatens to split a large chink in the Bamboo Curtain and becomes the terrified owner of the costliest baby-powder in the world.
As if this were not enough, Charlie gives his reluctant benison to a Giorgione painting, sticks a Rembrandt etching in a safe place, acquires a Rouault gouache without actually stealing it, sees something horrid in a Chinese dentist's office and performs Actual Bodily Harm on a Stipendiary Magistrate....
