This book is dedicated to those who have heard of Dürer and those who have not; to those who have had the privilege of admiring some of his works in the galleries of Europe, or who know them by reproductions only, to those who can fit his art into the pattern of European cultural history, and those in whom his name strikes no reverberation whatsoever.
After turning the leaves of Iván Fenyő's book, the reader will be familiar with the greatest master of German art, who, by conscious effort, peeled off the Gothic bract enveloping the budding art of the Renaissance and helped it unfold its petals into full bloom. Diirer's pioneering mission in the propagation of art by the new printing techniques paved the way for giving it to the masses. His realistic treatment of detail even of devotional subjects struck a new, bold note, and the merciless realism of his portrayal, devoid of niceties, reached far ahead of his time.
