An Anatomy of Drama begins by defining drama,
and showing how deeply rooted it is in society.
Because drama is a collective experience, of which
the audience's reaction is a vital part, it can be used
not only to spread, but also to test out objectively,
certain truths about ourselves.
Later chapters explore the connection between
drama and society, the nature of dramatic illusion,
the relation between the dramatist's style and the
actor's performance, and the place of the theatre
among the other media.
Martin Esslin is one of the few theatre critics who
combines a wide and deep knowledge of
international drama with a close involvement in the
day-tO'day production of plays. This conjunction of
experiences enables him to provide, in this book, a
highly stimulating view of drama both as an art and
as a function of the society in which we live.
