aspects of modern logic
The role of logic in philosophy is disputed among philosophers. Still it is a fact that many philosophical directions, traditional as well as modern, are closely related to particular ideological systems and theories. Often philosophers take a certain standpoint or contest it without reahzmg the logical principles of its foundation. Beth's book is not only an introduction to modem logic, but also relates logic to a number of central philosophical problems which demand logical reflection.

One finds in the book an easily readable description of the method in deductive logic developed by Beth and called by him the method of romantic tableaux. This method is related to all such methods of natural deduction but in certain respects is more 'natural' than many of those. Beth's method is particularly suitable for the clarification of a number of philosophical problems, of great importance to philosophers like Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, and Kant and shaping their thought to a large extent. Some philosophical points of debate treated in logical perspective in this book are those concerning the method of exposition, the paradoxes, nominalism versus realism, and the advantages and disadvantages of formalized languages opposite common usage. The book ends with a consideration of some very general and central basic ideas of mathematical thought and it is shown how certain modem directions in linguistics make use of these basic mathematical points of view. This book can be considered as a companion volume to Science, A Road to Wisdom by the same author, also published by D. Reidel Publishing Company. Vissza
