The quality of Greek vase painting and the intrinsic interest of the figure subjects chosen for depiction were never greater than in Athens in the fifty years following the invention of the 'red figure' technique in about 530 BC. This is the period covered by this book, a sequel to the author's handbook o\ Athenian Black Figure Vases, published in 1974, and, like it, designed to serve both students and connoisseurs of Greek art and myth. It presents a very full range of vase illustrations of this period, with a text which describes the styles and development of the painters and pays special attention to the content, mythological or genre, of the figure scenes. 'You cannot draw better, you can only draw differently', was Sir John Beazley's comment on one of these magnificent vase paintings.

John Boardman
is Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art in Oxford. He has spent several years in Greece, three of them as Assistant Director of the British School at Athens, and he has excavated in Smyrna, Crete, Chios and Libya. Subsequently he was Reader in Classical Archaeology and Fellow of Merton College in Oxford. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy, and has written widely on the art and archaeology of Archaic Greece - on excavations, on the date of the Knossos tablets, on Greek Burial Customs (with D. C. Kurtz), on Greek gems and, in the 'World of Art Library', on Greek Art, Greek Sculpture: The Archaic Period and Athenian Black Figure Vases.
