The work of a team of leading scholars, this atlas offers a new and highly readable account of the world of arts and letters of the European Renaissance (1300-1600). It provides an understanding of the many-sided nature of Renaissance culture, examining its roots in the traditions and circumstances of Italy's medieval city-states, and tracing the spread of its ideas and artistic movements north of the Alps.
Particular attention is paid to the work of the great artists and thinkers of the Renaissance - men such as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, Erasmus and Machiavelli. The book looks in detail at the intellectual, political and social milieux of the great European centres where Renaissance excellence flourished, and describes the beginnings of the religious controversies that would divide Europe into opposing ideological camps in the 16th century.
