He describes " _ , how, after an enraptured youth in Yorkshire and Italy, , there followed a more objective and poised period o^ discovering the roots of life in sculpture. He has included an especially detailed jaccount of the years - ^ when a group: of artists, inGl-udii|g Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Herbert Read, created • the style of the British thirties—a.'period of international : symbolic value in the history of modern art. Although in ; ' recent years she ha's also been-working in bronze, for
,, ; Barbara Hepworth carving temains the primary activity ? and her mastery of this is unsurpassed by any other I modern sculptor. She has been greatly honoured in her i 'own country and her fame is now world-wide, but success has brought with it no diminution of energy. Her ' ; sensibility for human and artistic tensions continues to
find a powerful response in the language of form. Professor A. M. Hammacher was born in Middelbo^ough, Holland, in 1897. An art cptic and art historian who häs specialized 'in the study of modern sculpture, he was Director of the Kröller Müller Museum in Otterlo 1947-63. Here he ^ established (in the garden) the world's first permanent : public outdoor sculpture museum. Currently he is Professor of Ajrt History at the Faculty of Architecture in the Technical University of Delft. Among his publications are Modern Sculpture, Modern English Sculpture and monographs on Lipchitz and Zadkine. He is , Honorary President of the International Association of
, Art Critics. ' >
