Before Knossos Arthur Evans's travels in the Balkans and Crete
Sir Arthur Evans (1851-1941) is best known as the excavator of the Palace of Minos at Knossos in Crete, legendary home of the Minotaur. His discoveries captured the imagination of people all over the world when first reported to the press.
Long before he went to Crete Evans had travelled in Scandinavia and in the Balkans. Using his sketches, notebooks and newspaper articles this book reconstructs his early journeys.
Between 1877 and 1882 as correspondent of the Manchester Guardian he reported on unprisings in Bosnia and Herzegovina until his expulsion by the Austrian authorities.

It is illustrated throughout with contemporary drawings and photographs, together with views of the sites as they appear today.
