BRITISH BOTANISTS
by
John Gilmour
From being Curator of the Herbarium and Botanical Museum at Cambridge, Mr. Gilmour became Assistant Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 1931 ; during the war he has been working for the Ministry of Fuel and Power. He has made a special study of the bibliography of British Botany and his knowledge of his subject, therefore, combines that of a scholar, administrator and scientific worker.

The British Isles and their Vegetation, and the story covers the work and the lives of men as diverse and remarkable as Robert Morison, who held the first botanical chair at Oxford in 1669 ; John Ray, the. Cambridge Puritan, who produced the first full-dress British Flora in 1690, the Rev. Stephen Hales (that brilliant and remarkable Perpetual Curate of Teddington), the two Hookers, father and son, who made Kew Gardens as we know them ; and many others, both distinguished and comparatively obscure, all of whom have made their individual contribution to the study of botany. Mr. Gilmour has written vividly and sympathetically of the great personalities, lucidly and brilliantly of their individual contributions, and has produced a most readable and invigorating book.
