Calcium entry blockers may differ in chemical structure, tissue selectivity and even mechanism of action, but they all share the ability to reduce the intracellular entry of calcium ions. Although these are essential for many processes of living cells, excessive entry of calcium ions occurs easily and is at the basis of cerebral and cardiovascular pathology.
The introductory chapter provides a didactic overview of the growing group of calcium entry blockers and their classification, while the succeeding chapters are devoted to the emerging therapeutic possibilities of the drugs, with regard to cardiovascular and cerebral dysfunctions. Included here are peripheral circulation, heart functioning, cerebral functions and blood pressure regulation. These chapters are built up progressively from physiological and pharmacological data to clinical applications. The final chapter deals exclusively with clinical aspects of the antihypertensive theory.

This is a unique and highly comprehensive study of calcium entry blockers, which make an important contribution to our understanding of many essential processes of cellular life. The authors not only review the current situation in the field, but also offer a number of conclusions. They look forward, with discussion and speculation, to the future. Vissza
