Caribbean
Beaches of fine sand, swaying palms, turquoise lagoons, the sweet scent of the trade winds and soft clouds like little mounds of whipped cream - the Caribbean is all that's left of the Garden of Eden. Wild mountains, impenetrable forests, shorelines that might still conceal a Robinson Crusoe. The Lesser and Greater Antilles have seen a significant increase in tourist numbers over the years, but they've also managed to keep that genuine atmosphere of fascination that sets them apart. The major attractions of these islands aren't just the incredibly beautiful landscapes, but also their incomparable history and culture. It was the European conquests that brought about the most violent impact on these lands, changing their original face once and for all. The result was a melting pot of different backgrounds: every corner of the islands is a little piece of Europe transplanted in the tropics, overlapping with the African traditions that form the essential ingredient. Almost amazingly, these little dots of land were able to mix the most intense features of Europe with the exuberance of Africa and the seductive calm of the tropics. The result of this combination is a rather fiery, Spanish style fascination amid the decadence of central Havana, a clean, French style beauty in Martinique, the most important centre of Creole culture, the Nordic influence shining through the pastel shades of the buildings in the Dutch Antilles, and the order and rather measured elegance of the British colonies.
