CHAGALL DISCOVERED
PROM RUSSIAN AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS
CONTRIBUTORS: Irintl Anioiiova. Andrei Voznesensky. and Marina Bessonova
The year 1987 marked the centennial of Marc Chagall's birth in the Russian town of Vitebsk. To celebrate this iinportant anniversary, Moscow's Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts held the Soviet Union's first major Chagall exhibit. This book, based upon the long-awaited exhibit, offers a novel opportunity to study and cherish previously unseen masterpieces by this great modern artist. It contains 150 full-page colour reproductions of works from Soviet collections and from collections of the artist's family. Many of these works have never before been reproduced in any publication.
Few can compare in originality and exuberance to Chagall, one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. He began studying painting while still in his teens in Vitebsk, and by the time of the October Revolution of 1917, he had participated in exhibitions in Moscow, Paris, and Berlin. After the October Revolution, Chagall was appointed Commissar for the Arts in Vitebsk. Later he became director of the Vitebsk Academy. He left the Soviet Union in 1922 and settled in Paris, his 'second Vitebsk', and there Chagall's world-wide fame was established.
For eighty years Chagall conjured images from such sources as the Bible, folk and fairy tales, and modern painting styles to form a delightful and unique mythical world. Chagall's works feature men and women, angels on horseback, winged grandfather clocks soaring high over Paris, the French countryside, and Vitebsk, reflecting his enigmatic and magical sense of whimsy.
Memories of Vitebsk and life in his home country echo throughout Chagall's work. In 1973 he returned to the Soviet Union, visiting Moscow and Leningrad. During his stays, he spent several hours at the Pushkin Museum, expressing his desire for a large exhibition of his work there. Two years after his death, when the 1987 centennial exhibition became a reality, it made headlines around the globe.
Created in conjuction with the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Chagall DiKovcred is a record of Chagall's life, his triumphant return to the Soviet Union, and the Pushkin Museum exhibition. It features more than 300 illustrations, as well as three important texts on Chagall.
Coniinued on the back flap

Contiuued from the front flap:
Pushkin Museum Director Irina Antonova discusses the centennial exhibit and Chagall's significance in twentieth-century art. Marina Bessonova, the Museum curator, examines the artist's life and the prevalent themes of his work. And noted Soviet poet Andrei Voznesensky pays a colourful homage to his friend and idol. "Across his pictures sail horizontal fiddlers, tradesmen, lovers," Voznesensky writes. "His Eiffel Tower stands on chicken's legs, as if coming out of folktales of his land Congratulations on your return. Great Master!"
Spanning Chagall's life from his roots in Russia to his final days, Chagall Discovereda major tribute to this beloved artist. Vissza
