The photographs used in this book were' chosen from a series taken during months of arduous tcavel through the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. This included flights through mountain passes 12,000 feet above sea-level, searching for tiny airstrips hidden amongst the clouds; small-boat voyages along the coast trips to the volcanic islands and coral atolls of the Melanesians, and visits to the expanding townships, jungle villages, and new developments. The final selection of photographs contains the colourful essence of the Territory. It shows the vast landforms of an area which is still largely untamed, the peoples who range from those still emerging ifrom the Stone Age to those studying the technique of the Computer Age, and the bizarre splendours of traditional ceremonies. The Territory is a place of immense contrasts, and it is amongst the fastest developing countries in the world. People who, less than forty years ago, were living in virtual savagery, are now enjoying a cash... Tovább
