"Comparative Political Economy is a badly needed book. There is no other study with such a far-reaching comparative and quantitative analysis of both economic and political development. Lane and Ersson cover not only the developed democracies but also the less developed areas and the communist world with discernment and balance."
Mancur Olsen, University of Maryland
"Lane and Ersson have produced an encyclopedic study of concepts, theories, and measures in crossnational comparative research on political economy. Their book reviews nearly all the established works in the field, and it is also up-to-date with citations to very recent literature. Students just entering this field will find Comparative Political Economy a rewarding place to begin their inquiry, and experienced scholars will appreciate the authors' efforts in drawing together valuable information for easy reference."

Comparative Political Economy is a
student's introduction to the comparative analysis of nations, public policy and economic affluence. It surveys the dominant theoretical approaches in the field of comparative politics and describes the polity and the economy in a large set of countries: developed Western countries, rapidly changing East European nations, and states in the Third World. Economic, social, and political developments are analysed at length and the basic concepts -democracy versus authoritarian systems and capitalist systems versus socialist ones -are employed to illuminate similarities and differences between politico-economic systems in the world. It explores the conditions for political democracy as well as the conditions for economic growth, applying quantitative techniques to crucial problems in political economy concerning the interaction between politics and economics.
