Compendium of Seashells is the most complete full-color identification book on marine shells of the world published in this century, a must for every serious shell collector or hobbyist.
A decade in preparation and compiled by two of the world's leading malacologists, this beautiful and authoritative reference volume includes 4,200 full-color photographs to make shell identification quick and certain. Until now, no single book has approached the scope of this useful and reliable overview of the world's better-known marine shells.

Designed primarily for the amateur collector, the book also serves the scientific community through the inclusion of several hundred holotype specimens from museums and private collections. These are the unique specimens scientists and others must refer to when the exact identity of a species needs to be established.
All categories of marine shells are described and illustrated, including individual color photographs and geographical and ecological information on 180 species of cowries (Cypraeidae), 334 cones (Conidae), 132 volutes (Volutidae), 140 scallops, (Pec-tinidae), helmets (Cassidae) and many others. Thousands of examples from all over the world are included; from Athens to Zanzibar, New England to Alaska; for instance, 900 species from the Philippines, 720 from Australia and 400 from the eastern United States alone.
The impressive, efficient design of the Compendium permits rapid location and identification of almost every shell likely to be found in a private collection or shell shop. Finally, its unique bibliography to world shell literature is organized within a classification outline by family and genus, allowing the collector remarkably easy access to further reading in areas of special interest.
Thorough, comprehensive and masterfully organized, the Compendium of Seashells is surely destined to become a classic in its field—one not likely to be replaced for many years. Vissza
