Fang LI Zhi graduated from the Physics Department of the Beijing University in 1956. He was appointed successively as a junior fellow of the Institute of Modern Physics (1956-1958), a lecturer (1963), professor (1978) and vice-president (1984-1987) of the University of Science and Technology of China. He is now a professor of astrophysics at the Beijing Astronomical Observatory. In 1981 he became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research covers the theory of nuclear reactors (1956-1958), solid state physics (1962-1966), and relativistic astrophysics and cosmology (after 1971). He won the national awards for science and technology (1978), the first awards of the International Gravity Research Foundation (1985), and the national first awards for scientifically popular articles (1987).
