Eric Linklater was born in 1899, is married and has two sons and two daughters. He lives in the North of Scotiand.
He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, then, after serving in the Black Watch 1917-19, he became a medical student at Aberdeen University. He was editor of the University magazine, wrote several plays for University production, and 'spoke Interminably at the Union Giving up his medical studies, he went to Bombay as Assistant Editor on the Times of India. He returned home by way of Persia, Batum, Constantinople, and Vienna to become assistant to the Professor of English Literature at Aberdeen. Elected to a Commonwealth Fellowship in 1928, he went first to Cornell University and later to the University of California, then took to writing and was rapidly confirmed as an author. He has dabbled in politics and repented, and travelled widely, but never deeply, from the Scandinavian countries to Eastern Asia.

During the last war he served first as a Major commanding a Fortress Company of Royal Engineers in Orkney and then under the Director of Public Relations in the War Office and in Italy, 1941-5. He was Rector of Aberdeen University 1945-8, and he went to Korea as a temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1951.
