Since the opening up of Eastern Europe resulting from the fali of the Berlin wall six years ago in 1989, the Central and Eastern European countries have taken considerable steps towards reform. In particular the four Visegrád countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary) have laid the foundation for a constitutional markét economy. The present study outlines the important steps taken towards reform, which have already been put into effect in fundamental areas of jurisdiction. It is unmistakable that the Visegrád countries are interested in participating in the Continental European system of law. Since the Europe Agreement became effective, making possible an eventual membership for Central and Eastern European countries in the European Union, the question of approximation of law to Community law has become more and more the center of discussion.
