Few places on earth can rival southern Africa's wealth of mammal species - some 337 out of a world total of around 4 250. Chris and Tilde Stuart's Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa has been specially designed to facilitate the identification of what would otherwise be a bewildering array of groups of similar species and is the first field guide to use full-colour photographs to highlight the characteristic features of each land mammal. It is also the first to include whales and dolphins.
The book is divided into 112 colour plates; where possible each plate groups related or similar species to make comparisons easy. Opposite the plates are concise identification pointers which draw attention to the diagnostic features of each species, together with a wealth of additional biological information on measurements, habitat, behaviour, food and reproduction. Distribution maps have been provided for the majority of species. Where relevant, skin photographs and spoor drawings... Tovább

Chris Stuart was born in Yorkshire, England and was educated there and in South Africa, obtaining his M.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Natal. He has worked with several southern African conservation agencies, including the Cape Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation, the Albany Museum and the Namib Desert Research Station in Namibia. His research interests concentrate on threatened Chris and Tilde Stuart
species, problem animals and carnivores and he is a
member of the Cat Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. He has published numerous scientific and popular articles on wildlife matters and now works as an independent ecologist/conservationist.
Tilde Stuart was born in Tyrol, Austria and was educated there and at the German School in Teheran, Iran. She received her doctorate at the University of Innsbruck and thereafter worked for two years at a rural hospital in the northern Transvaal. She has a deep interest in photography and wildlife conservation and, in partnership with her husband Chris, has launched the African Carnivore Survey to promote carnivore conservation and research throughout Africa.
