Ashburnham and John and Florence Dowell, meet each year at a European resort. John Dowell likens their relationship to a minuet, genteel and done in perfect concert. But his perceptions are flawed: the couples' dance is actually much darker, fueled by the uncontrollable passions that hide behind a facade of propriety.
