WITH¦ILLUSTKATIONS'BY THEHONFLORENCEAMHERST ANDISABELLEFORREST
16 colour plates
HERBS play a part in the life of everyone: mint sauce for lamb, sage and onion stuffing for roast chicken, camomile tea, administered as a physic to Peter Rabbit after his escapades in Mr Macgregor's garden, parsley sauce, rosemary, lavender, liquorice, fennel, burnet, borage and marjoram: names for every cook in every kitchen.
Apart from their culinary uses, from medieval times herbs have been a major part in the doctor's armoury and the famous herbals of Culpepper and Gerard are still read today. Herbal medicines are still available and many a country remedy based on herbs cures headaches sprains and cuts in the 1980s.
The Herb-Garden tells most charmingly of all the herbs, common and uncommon, that can be grown in the traditional English garden. The gardening advice is simple. Herbs are easy to grow and accommodating plants and this book can be followed with confidence.

The Herb-Garden tells most charmingly of all the herbs, common and uncommon, that can be grown in the traditional English garden. The gardening advice is simple. Herbs are easy to grow and accommodating plants and this book can be followed with confidence.
As might be expected from a book first published in the spacious days before the First World War, the author assumes that everyone has ample space for a proper herb garden. However such lack of space need not deter anyone from growing a selection of their own herbs. These can be grown successfully in window boxes or in tubs on a window sill, so town dwellers are not excluded and even a small garden can grow a number of herbs in a small space if they are rigorously controlled.
But the main beauty of this book lies in its charm: the charm of the text sprinkled with legend and anecdote, the charm of the illustrations, so beautifully painted in colour, the charm of the Herb Garden itself redolent of an English Summer.
