George I came to the throne in 1714; George IV died
in 1830. Between those dates Georgian London trans-
formed itself into a great Imperial Capital. A criss-
cross pattern of streets and squares covered former
marshes and meadows; new bridges spanned the
Thames at Westminster and Blackfriars, and later at
three more points; new roads linked Paddington and
Islington, and pushed down into Southwark and
Lambeth; villages such as Hackney and Fulham
became suburbs; and the arcaded terraces of Somer-
set House and the Adelphi hinted at a Thames Em-
bankment. These are some of the bare facts of the
