An
Lnyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked — just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.

Goya was very far from being one of those misunderstood geniuses whose worth is acknowledged only belatedly — he was a highly successful artist who amassed considerable wealth through his painting. He began his career as a designer of tapestry cartoons for the Spanish court, but soon began to be in demand as a society portrait painter. His contemporaries were not slow to recognize his talent; he was inundated with commissions, and was made official painter to the court of Charles IV.
In his forties Goya nearly died of a mysterious illness that left him profoundly deaf. He became increasingly introspective, and although he continued to execute commissions for the court and aristocracy, he produced at the same time a large body of work of a more private nature that seems to spring directly from the imagination. These powerful, pessimistic and sometimes horrifying paintings and etchings, coloured by the troubled times in which he lived, culminated in the famous Black Paintings of his late years.
Goya was a master of technique and a tireless innovator, experimenting in all the media from fresco to miniatures on ivory. The impact of his paintings is tremendous, and although we sometimes have to guess at their meaning, we can always recognize the passion that motivated them and admire the breathtaking sureness of the artist's hand.
