The spectacular growth and development of certain developing countries is the focus of intense study and debate. This volume stands out among the existing literature as one that attempts to empirically clarify the basic conditions and elements required for achieving economic development in the long run. Sufficient savings for needed investment and efficiency of capital, the basic factor behind successful development is hypothesized to be the social capability of the economy to absorb technological advances. This innovative idea is investigated in this book through an examination of the growth of residuals of developed countries and newly industrializing economies, and a comparison of these measures with the rates exhibited by contemporary developing
economies.
