The hunting instinct is one of man's most primitive iirges, and in this book Michael Brander traces the development of that instinct from prehistoric times, when hvmting skill vyas essential for survival, to the present day, where in many parts of the world hunting and shooting have become highly organized industries.
It is a story which ranges from the development ¦ of bows and arrows to modern firearms; from Stone Age man hunting alongside his sUnking, jackal-like hounds to the modern foxhimting enthusiasts with their pink coats and highly bred packs; from the first forest laws which attempted to preserve game for kings and the nobihty, to twentieth-century restrictions on bag-limits and hunting seasons.

But the himters were not without their opponents in the past any more than they are without them today. Traditional enemies have been the poachers, and their story is told from those in Norman times who might forfeit an eye or a Umb for shooting the king's deer, to the modern poacher with his high speed car and silent rifle with telescopic sights. And there are those who have been enemies for different reasons -seventeenth-century Puritans who thought the sport too frivolous, and those who condemn the mass slaughter of big game which has been such a feature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Africa, India and the USA.
Through the centuries hunting has been a source of inspiration to artists, and indeed it is contemporary illustrations which provide essential sources of information about its development. The illustrations in this book, which are in colour and black and white, therefore provide not only a visually superb complement to the text, but are also important documents of the subject.
