For over a hundred years Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights have been amongst the most widely-read of British novels. The two Bronte sisters, Charlotte and Emily, wrote them under pseudonyms and had them published in the same year, 1847. But except that they are both love-stories and that they are both infused with the strange, rarefied atmosphere of their author's home surroundings, the two have little in common.There is nothing in Jane Eyre of the nightmare quality of Wuthering Heights: it is a tragic and intensely real narrative of a young governess who falls in love with the master of the house in which she is working, and whose feelings are so truly described that they shocked many of the book's Victorian readers. Through contrast rather than comparison the two novels have supported each other's popularity in numerous editions.
