The extensive introduction contains a wealth of information on bird biology and the major types of habitat and an extensive account of bird families and their different characteristics. An equally detailed section on the practicalities of birdwatching offers the watcher much advice on fieldcraft and equipment, and reflects the author's concern for the protection and conservation of birds and the need to put their interests first at all times.
