doctrines of Class War, Nationalism and Nihilism, and its

John Bowie was educated at Marlborough and Balliol,
where he was a Brackenbury scholar. As a history specialist
master at Westminster and later at Eton, he gained a
reputation as an outstanding teacher. During the war he
served in the Air Ministry and the Foreign Office; then
became lecturer at Wadham College, Oxford, Leverhulme
Research Fellow, and visiting Professor at Columbia
University, New York, and Grinnell College, Iowa. Since
1950, he has been Professor at the College of Europe,
