The best known and most substantial jurist of the variegated group of lawyers known as the American realists was Karl Llewellyn, a man of wide interests and colourful character, who made important contributions to the fields of legal éducation, legal sociology, the study of the legal profession, commercial law, contract and civil liberties. Legal realism has been assimilated to a large extent into American legal culture, while in other parts of the common law world some of the American battles of the period 19x0-40 are being fought again. The best known and most substantial jurist of the variegated group of lawyers known as the American realists was Karl Llewellyn, a man of wide interests and colourful character, who made important contributions to the fields of legal éducation, legal sociology, the study of the legal profession, commercial law, contract and civil liberties. Of his writings, The Cheyenne Way is considered a classic by social anthropologists, and The Bramble Bush is a legal best seller. He was the only American to be awarded the Iron Cross, and the Chief Reporter of what is perhaps the most ambitious Code in the history of the Common Law, the Uniform Commercial Code.
But Llewellyn's main claim to lasting fame is as a jurist and, in this respect, the significance of his work has not been fully appreciated. He is, inter alia, the grandfather of "the Law in Context" series. The first part of this book is an historical essay on the rise of the realist movement from 1870 (the date of Langdell's appointment to Harvard) to 1931 (Llewellyn's famous debate with Pound). In this section the author considers the work of Langdell, Gray, Holmes and Pound, as well as that of the pioneers of realism, such as Corbin, Hohfeld and Cook. Part II is a detailed study of the life and ideas of Karl Llewellyn, in which attention is focused mainly on six major works {Cases and Materials on the Law of Sales, The Bramble Bush, The Cheyenne Way, Law in Our Society, The Uniform Commercial Code and The Common Law Tradition); his most important articles and unpublished writings, and his work with the Pueblo Indians and on contiaued 011 back Aap Vissza
