Limits of Predictability is about the predictive power of modern science. It consists of ten survey chapters addressing the problems involved in making predictions in various fields of learning. The articles discuss fundamental questions that deserve expert attention; but at the same time, the authors have sought to make their articles complete enough to be understood not only by experts but also by the average mathematically literate reader.
Problems of predictability in various fields are covered, including not only phenomena of physical origin such as weather and climate, earthquakes, autowaves in chemical and biological media, and those treatable in terms of synergetics and dynamical chaos, information theory, and time series, respectively, but also phenomena of a social nature, such as the "Oedipus effect" in social forecasting, presidential and senatorial elections in the United States, and laws of ethnogenesis.
