Practical topics, such as colling about an apartment, catching a pláne, and finding out whafs going on in town, make the material interesting and moti-vating for students.
The Cassette consists of public address announcements, tele-phone exchanges, dialogues, and other short recordings of people speaking naturally with the normál pauses, hesitations, and inter-ruptions that occur in authentic spoken language. Students listen to the tape, then perform simple tasks, such as labeling a diagram or map and filling in a form or chart. The emphasis is on sifting out the important information and getting the gist of what is heard rath-er than on trying to understand every word.
