THE MAURITSHUIS in The Hague is, with the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, the most intimate and exclusive and, after the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the justifiably most frequently visited gallery in the Netherlands. Its collection is - when compared with many other collections of paintings - not very large. It comprises about iooo objects, about 400 of which are on permanent exhibition. These works are howcver so outstanding that the collection can be counted amongst those of the highest international quality. The emphasis is naturally on the mastcrs of the 'golden I7th century' of Dutch painting. The museum has no less than 14 works by Rembrandt, 13 by Jan Steen, 3 of the very rare paintings by Vermeer and 5 portraits by Frans Hals. Amongst them are many that e very one knows from reproductions. There are alsó represented, almost without exception by master-pieces, the unjustifiably so-called 'minor masters' of Dutch painting. The gallery alsó possfesses important paintings by the great Flemish masters of the I5th, ióth and I7th centurics and a fewbrilliant pieces from the 'Germán School'. The luxurious building in which the paintings are housed defmitely contributes to the deep impression made by this collection which is so compact both spatially and artistically. It is the 'Mauritshuis' named after Count Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen (called Johan Maurits van Nassau 111 the Netherlands) because it was built by him, having been erected in 1633-1644 by the architect Pieter Post according to plans by the famous Jacob van Campen. With its distinguished pilaster grouping in bright ashlar 111 front of dark brick, the two-storied palace is certainly the most beautiful classical building in the Netherlands. Our volume, with its 48 colour plates, shows a number of the most precious and famous pictures in the collection from the great I7th century of Dutch painting and of the Flemish and foreign masters. The accompanying texts by one of the best authorities 011 the gallery give the most important details about the masters and, at the same time, lead to a better understanding of the content of the paintings, so that they will alsó be welcomed by the expert.
