SS Michael Winn has written a book that is by turns enlightening, infuriating, and thought provoking. His lucid introductions to data processing and communications technology will be invaluable to real estate professionals struggling to understand the impact of the 'information age' on their industry. His analysis of individual alienation in an increasingly high-tech society and his thoughts on how developers (and the communities they work in) should deal with that alienation are provocative, to say the least. It's the best kind of book — the kind that forces you to think even when you disagree with the author's conclusions 99

tt Michael Winn's polemic against media-induced alienation and civic passivity is a welcome antidote for political cynicism and technological determinism. His formula for reinvigorating communications within the community and, by extension, the community itself, is refreshingly novel. The unification of theories — communication, planning, and political — which Winn attempts is long overdue and complemented by concrete proposals for getting information technology under human control. 99

tS Through our understanding of technology, we can manipulate it to create the most enriching environment we can envision for future generations. The way in which we build, where we build, and what we build must be studied in conjunction with the high technology we have begun to let control our community plans. Now more than ever, it is imperative that legislators, community activists, and students investigate the consequences of development that is not sensitive to the social and physical needs of communities, recognizing that no two communities are alike. The contents of this book will assist those involved in the development of communities to make the connection between the technology of today and those needs. 99
