Ixfordshire, 1947. Kit Smallwood, hiding a painful secret and exhausted from nursing soldiers during the Second World War, escapes to Wickam Farm where her friend is setting up a charity sending midwives to the Moonstone Home in South India. Then Kit meets and falls in love with Anto, a charming trainee doctor nearing the end of his English éducation.
But when Anto informs his family that he is shortly to return home with an English bride, his parents are appalled, as is Kits Anglo-Indian mother who has spent most of her life trying to forget a painful Indián past.
