There are many pocket-size introductions to Chinese, but few which do so much in so little space as Chinese in Your Pocket. Dr. Swadesh's experience in organizing rapid courses for various languages right on the field in Burma and in China has resulted in a book of a live language with live material for use in live situations. But don't take this for one of those handbooks made up in a hurry for men of supposedly low I. Q. to get a smattering of pidgin Chinese. (2) The system of romanization used here is in general agreement with recent trends. You can't forget to ««aspirate your p's and t's if they are written as Vs and d's to start with.
(3) The over-all characteristic of informality in both the style of description and the language taught not only makes the subject matter interesting, but also brings home the truth that this is the language of real people in their everyday talk.
