Mother mi ttie Matiatma
Mahatma Gandhi "the prophet of peace" and Mother Teresa "the saint of the gutter" belong to the two great religions of the world, Hinduism and Christianity. Both of them are "Mahatmas" (great souls). Gandhi lived the highest values of Hinduism and applied them to every sphere of life. He also applied the highest Gospel principles. Prime Minister of India I.K.Gujral, speaking on the death of Mother Teresa, said, "Gandhi and Mother in this century demonstrated to us the beauty and power of this ultimate and most difficuh form of worship." Both were led by God to serve humanity. Gandhi is "the greatest Hindu" and Mother Teresa "the greatest Christian" of this century. They represent two examples of these great traditions, the Hindu and the Christian.
This book is a tribute to what they have done for the oppressed poor. It is also a dialogue between the two ancient religions. It presents a deeper understanding of service to the poor. Some of the theological considerations of the mutual enrichment between Hinduism and Christianity are thought-provoking.
John Moniz, bom in 1959 at Mangalore (India), was ordained priest in 1987 after his theological studies in St. Joseph's Seminary, Mangalore. He pursued his philosophical studies in Kerala University and Master's degree in Sociology at Kamataka University. He obtained his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He is the author oi Liberated Society, other booklets, and many articles. Currently he is working on A New World Order Mahatma Gandhi and Pope John Paul II, besides his academic, pastoral and preaching activities. Vissza
