In the little town of Mitford, New South Wales, five babies had been stolen—all were boys less than three months old and all had apparently been neglected by their mothers.
The local Criminal Investigation Branch had given up, and on his arrival a cold trail faced Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, the half-aborigine detective who had never failed to finish a case.
Arthur Upfield, though born in Britain, lived in Australia all his aduit life. For years he roamed the sub-continent learning all the minor miracles of Australian life. He worked as a boundary-rider, cattle-drover, rabbit-trapper and station-manager. In particular he got to know the aborigines and their customs. All this rich experience he pours into the 'Bony' novels. Mr. Upfield died in February, 1964.
