Recognized as a creative researcher, Dr. Brown has made basic contributions in the fields of pharmacology, cardiovascular medicine, animal behavior, neurophysiology and psychophysiology. She did pioneering work in bio-feedback research and has continued to devote her research to expanding this new science. She was largely responsible for organizing the Bio-Feedback Research Society. Dr. Brown has edited two reference books, The Bio-Feedback Syllabus and The Alpha Syllabus, the latter with J. Klug. New Mind, New Body is the first comprehensive report, lay or professional, on how the mind can control the body.

by BARBARA B. BROWN, Ph.D. Foreword by HUGH DOWNS
This book, by a pioneer researcher in the field, deals with the extraordinary world of bio-feedback—the phenomenon by which man can learn to control his own biological and mental functioning. Dr. Brown presents scientific evidence of how this is done and why this process is therapeutically important to medical, psychosomatic, psychological and behavioral problems.
In reporting her ovm and others' work in bio-feedback research. Dr. Brown describes experiments that will I fascinate the reader. These range from I studies showing the skin's ability to reveal the mind's unconscious reactions to reality, through experiments in the control of muscles, heartbeat, blood pressure and brain waves, to mental activity, meditation and altered states of consciousness. Demonstrating the inseparability of mind and body, Dr. Brown points out that bio-feedback is
(continued on back flap)
(continued from front flap)
a new medium of communication: between mind and body, between consciousness and the unconscious, between patient and therapist.
In conclusion Dr. Brown describes what she believes will be the future of bio-feedback—a future that includes voluntary control over most automatic internal body processes; relief of medical problems, from asthma to chronic heart disease; help in cases of psychosomatic illness and emotional distress; control over sleep; and the possibility of voluntary control over death.
Dr. Brovm describes the origin of bio-feedback research, its development and its almost unlimited potential—though still in its infancy—as one of the most exciting and potentially important discoveries in medical and psychological research. She argues against behavior control and for use of the individual's ovm mind-brain capacities to control his ovm mind and body. In a world where people feel they are increasingly losing control over their environment, the possibility that they can learn to control their ovm bodies, minds and emotions is an exciting prospect to laymen as well as psychologists and physicians.
