OWLS
OF THE
WORLD
Owls are dramatic, unseen hunters of the night, whose very 'invisibility' has lent them an air of mystery and excitement. The true facts about their lives are just as exciting, whether it be the pert bobbing of a Little Owl as it focuses on an intruder, or the lethally silent swoop of a huge Eagle Owl as it swerves between northern pines to make a kill.
Owls of the World is a celebration of these masterful predatpi's. In clear, precise language the text draws together the findings of the world's leading ornithologists to present informative and highly readable accounts of the life of each species: their hunting techniques, courtship rituals, nesting habits, territorial calls and the special features that allow each to specialize and thrive in a particular habitat. Every one of the 148 species is painted in superb full colour by one of the world's most acclaimed bird artists. Each species is depicted in breeding plumage in a characteristic pose, often in a detailed and typical background.
Owls of the World includes a 26-page reference section containing distribution maps of all the species, a full species checklist giving details of size and geographical range, a detailed reading list and a comprehensive index.
Owls of the World is a fascinating and spectacularly illustrated book about an extraordinary group of birds. Many are threatened by the activities of man, and almost all of them still present a challenge to the enquiring birdwatcher anxious to learn yet more about their complex and absorbing lives.
