The highlands of scotland, parts of which were first förmed 2,800 millión years ago, lie on Europe's Atlantic margin. The climate is harsh and much of the soil poor; and yet the area is renowned for the splendour of its rugged landscape and the individuality of the Gaels, a people who have had an inordinate influence on the outside world.
