Butterflies are among the most colourful animals of the countryside but they are also most elusive and are difficult to track and record. This book will enable the butterfly-watcher to identify, by careful and patient observation, 147.of the most common British and European species.
The main butterfly features are described in detail, the colour and pattern, the mode of life, the distribution, and the characteristics of the caterpillar. Each species is accompanied by a full-colour photograph of the upperside, and of the underside where this is particularly diagnostic.
The introductory section stresses the importance of watching butterflies rather than collecting them and provides information on ecology, migration, and the life-cycle of the butterfly. There is also a list of host-plants together with a comprehensive check-list of all British and European butterflies.
