These monuments apart, any visitor to Portugal today will be
impressed by many other aspects of the country : fishing villages with brightly coloured craft, never-ending stretches of
beach, picturesque markets and festivals, small fortified villages, neatly terraced vineyards in the Douro Valley arid wide
open spaces in the Alentejo. Above all, the Portuguese themselves with their saudade - the nostalgia for a glorious past which is expressed in literature and fado - will win one over with their natural kindness and hospitality.
