Philip L. Masters, the author, was born in 1913, the son of parents not themselves educated at independent schools, who made considerable sacrifices to send their three children to prep and public schools. He won a History scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford, but
left before completing the course. He started teaching in prep schools and has been doing so ever since except for five years' war service in the Navy. His teaching experience was gained in two boarding and two day schools. In 1953 he became headmaster of a day prep school which he has modernised and enlarged. It now has 72 boys in a separate pre-prep department and 150 in the main school. He is a keen exponent of modern teaching methods and has introduced audiovisual teaching of French, 'New Mathematics', and Science based on the new Nuffield Project.
The author is now serving his second three year period on the Council of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools and has served (or is now serving) on six... Tovább
